Molson Coors Brewing Company's Amber Moon

I refuse to reference this as 'Blue Moon Brewing Company,' just out of spite if for no other reason. I was impressed by Blue Moon when I first had it though, so I'm hoping for the best out of this one too.

Pours a nice, clear amber. The light tan head never really forms, which isn't unusual for a wheat.

Nice amber smell to it, with a good wheat twang. About like I'd expect from an amber wheat, of which this is the only class member that I know of.

A bit too sweet in the taste. It's brewed with lime leaves and limes, and I think it's a bit over done. Otherwise it has a nice feel and would make a great amber/wheat, but it's just another example of a beer that's overly flavored.

Boulevard Brewing Company's Unfiltered Wheat

Found this stray at the back of the cellar, in an aluminum bottle, of all things. I bought it out of state as a single just because I'd never had it, and I guess I may as well start out this pizza with a wheat.

Pours clear yellow, with a zippy white head that stays at a sheet with good carbonation. The label says it's unfiltered and that it has a distinctive cloudy appearance. Wait a minute, it pours out in chunks in the dregs. Not cloudy.

It has a mellow wheat smell. Not like a wit, although hints of the yeast peek through.

Nice enough taste. Mellow for a wheat, mildly zippy. Not bad, but not great, either.

Rogue Brewing Company's Somer Oramge Honey Ale

Not sure who Somer is, but I'm guessing the label doesn't do her justice. Looking forward to a wheat from Rogue though, even if it does have the other junk in it. Hopefully it won't be as heavy as the hazelnut in their Hazelnut Brown.

Pours an unfiltered dark yellow with a huge white head. Stays longer than any head on a wheat beer I've seen.

Smells like a wheat, with that musty smell malted wheat can have. Slight citrus zing to it, but it's not identifiable as orange right now, probably because it's muted by the honey.

I like it. Immediately zippy like a wheat should be, probably aided by the orange. Good smoothness to it as well, with a clean finish that isn't as dry as most beers with honey in them. No real bitterness to speak of, but a twang that hits right up front and quickly fades.

Good beer. Another one I hope they keep around, at least on a seasonal basis. They did the additions just right, and you aren't swamped by orange and honey like other breweries might have done.

Harpoon Brewery's UFO Hefeweizen

Always look forward to a new wheat, even with the cheesy UnFiltered Offering half-ass acronym.

Pours hazy and yellow, with a huge white head that isn't too crisp because it's unfiltered. It develops huge cells before fading to a collar, with slow carbonation.

Light and zippy smell like a wheat should have. More yeasty than malty, due to the lack of filtration. So far, I'm looking forward to it.

A bit sweet, and it's not as zippy as I'd like because it's not filtered, but that adds to the body. Although I prefer zippy to body in a wheat, this is very good for an unfiltered, which would be expected to add to the body and slow the feel a bit. Very light bitterness that fades fast. Clean aftertaste, without being too dry.

Great summer beer. Probably my favorite Harpoon so far.

Rahr and Sons Brewing Company's Summertime Wheat

Good to see another Texas beer at the store, especially one of my favorite styles.

Pours a cloudy, loosely filtered (at most) orangish yellow with a perfectly white head that thins quickly. A bit of a wit smell, which is sorely disappointing.

Yeah, it's not a full-on wit, but I think it tries to be. Damn I wish I would have read the label closer. Disappointing. More of a green grape flavor than the usual chemical or plastic tastes, but still.

At least I have a friend who'll drink the other five, cause I'm not touching them. Never thought I'd see the day when I was looking forward to the three Sam Adams I have sitting in the fridge.

Four + Brewing Company's Rype

I don't know man, I think I may be headed downhill. Billed as "like a Beligian, but you can't tell from the looks." Well, I don't like Belgians. And thelooks are piss poor. So this one is getting ready to both suck and blow.

Pours a horribly clear cider-ey transparent orange. Doesn't look like a beer so much as a flavored ice tea. It's from Utah, so I guess that's no surprise. Dull light tan head that thins to spots very quickly.Yeah, smells like a wit. A hint of orange citrus, but dull.

Water in Houston has more body and flavor than this (and that explains the third testicle I've grown). Dull, flat taste. Like a half-strength lager, or a Michelob. Fine, make that 1/4 strength.

The best thing about this beer is the aftertaste. Mostly because it means you're that much closer to not having to taste it any more, but it's actually a decent balance of hops and malt, once the beer is down.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company's Unfiltered Wheat

I'm liking this brewery more and more. Unlike Sam Adams or New Belgium, Sierra Nevada has grown without compromise.

Their Unfiltered Wheat seems to be no exception. Pours a cloudy yellow with a great head and retention, especially for a wheat, and strong carbonation that will probably make it feel more crisp.

Great zippy smell that a wheat should have. Not really bitter, and not really bready, but kind of raw and grainy, a bit coarse but still light.

Excellent beer, just what the style calls for. An almost tart bitterness hits at first, followed by the grainy wheat and overall a crisp, zippy feel and taste that is substantial, but still fairly light like the style should be.

One of my favorite wheats. Crisp and clean, with good body and flavor, one of the strongest wheats out there while staying light.
